Single Malt for Beginners

Everything you need to choose and enjoy a first single malt — no jargon, no snobbery.

Starting with single malt can feel like joining a club where everyone already knows the rules. It isn’t — and the rules mostly don’t matter. This section covers the questions every new whisky drinker actually has: what to buy first, how much to spend, whether you’re “allowed” ice (you are), and what all the words on the label mean.

Our advice throughout is the same: start unpeated and gentle, spend £30–45, and don’t buy anything because someone online called it a masterpiece. Taste is personal; a bottle you enjoy at £35 beats a trophy you don’t at £90.
